Another item I recommend is the book referred to in the podcast – The Incomplete Book of Running. Tailwind Nutrition was one of the first running nutrition options I tried as a runner and it's a brand I keep coming back to. The book itself is hard to put down given the suspense from each story. The authors provide a lot of detail for why many of these tragedies occurred as well as the impact on the rescuers. I learned a lot from it and think it should be required reading for any ultrarunner, especially those who head into the mountains, no matter where in the world they are running. I always carry two lights on any solo ultrarun since you never know what can happen. Trails can get very dark, especially in a forest, so a good light is essential. My main problem with headlamps though is that I misplace or give them away, so you can never have too many.
Dirt, rocks, snow, and scree — the Cascadia 16 runs well on them all. Along those lines, we’re also not going to delve into fitness watches, despite the fact that every runner loves to have a great fitness watch. People’s preferences on which is the best GPS watch vary tremendously, but it’s almost important to note that there’s really not a best overall watch — only a best watch for your situation and needs.
